Technical Lecture on "Petrophysical Analysis to Evaluate Shale Gas"

The Department of Geology, University of Karachi and Pakistan Association of Petroleum Geoscientists (PAPG), UoK Chapter is arranging a lecture on “Petrophysical Analysis to Evaluate Shale Gas” By Mr. Syed Aftab Alam Scientist II, Center of Petroleum & Minerals, Research Institute,

King Fahad University of Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Arabia on Saturday, 2^nd  November 2013, at Auditorium, Department of Geology, University of Karachi, at 11.00am followed by Hi-Tea. Kindly participate to increase our understanding of unconventional resources and  promote the scientific culture in the country.

  Abstract

Discovery of unconventional sources of hydrocarbon exploration has brought a revolutionary change in the domestic energy sector. The US, Russia and other European countries and to some extent; China is on the fast track to fulfill their energy demand by this method. In the Middle East; Qatar, Iran and Saudi Arabia are also discovering the unconventional reservoirs.

Evaluation of Shale Formation is a complex phenomenon and has involved multiple disciplinary expertise. In this presentation an overview of all the steps has been presented. For a better explanation, resource pyramids and flow charts have been used to make the concept more clear.

Using core data and its petrophysical analysis to evaluate the shale formation is the main topic of this presentation. Nano size porosity, micro fractures and the lay minerals present in the shale is a big challenge for the industry. Still there is considerable difference in the results of different service providers, but latest techniques and tools have been developed to overcome this difficulty.

Necessary parameters of geological/engineering aspects of the petrophysical properties have been highlighted. Simultaneously, the result, the complexity and authenticity of lab results has been discussed in detail.

This presentation is based on a project carried in Saudi Arabia. Entitled, “ Petrophysical model development for the Quaisaba Shale Formation in Rub-Al-Khali Basin.” 

This presentation will be interesting for senior students of Geology/Petroleum Engineering and for the industry personnel of different disciplines who want to develop a multidisciplinary team to explore this challenging field.

The venue and dates will be intimated soon, but preferably it will be working days (Thursday & Friday)

Eligibility Criteria: PGN student members in M.Sc (3/4 semester), BS (6/8 semester), MPhil/MS and recent students not doing any job. If the workshop is organized at QAU, Non-PGN students from QAU would also be allowed.
