The British Embassy in Cairo and the Cambridge
Overseas Trust are pleased to offer scholarships to successful
applicants to Masters courses at the University of Cambridge, UK.
-
The Chevening scholarship programme started in 1984, and the
scholarships are awarded to talented people who have been identified as
potential future leaders across a wide range of fields including
politics, business, the media, civil soceity, religion and academia.
Most scholars undertake a one year Master's degree.
Since its start in Egypt, the programme has sent over 1,000 exceptional individuals to study at universities all over the UK. The programme is managed in the UK and overseas by the British Council.
-
The Cambridge Overseas Trust was established in 1989 by the
University of Cambridge in order to support international students on
degree courses. Since then it has helped more than 7,000 young people
from over 65 countries to study at one of the finest universities in the
world.
The University of Cambridge aims to contribute to society through the pursuit of education, learning and research at the highest international levels. While taking pride it its 800 year history, it focuses on research capable of transforming human knowledge and society. The large number of international students in the University (over 18% of the student population last year) contributes to the quality and diversity of the student community in Cambridge.
-
The British Embassy in Cairo and the Trust are working together to offer the Egypt Chevening Cambridge Scholarship, tenable only at the University of Cambridge as part of Chevening's international scholarship programme.
Who is eligible?
The scholarships are targeted at students who are
citizens of Egypt, who meet the Chevening criteria of academic
excellence, high motivation and potential leadership qualities, and who
can meet the rigorous admission criteria of the University of
Cambridge.
What courses are eligible?
Any Masters or one-year taught postgraduate course at
the University of Cambridge will be eligible, but priority will be
given to courses in the following fields:
Human Rights | Media |
Environment | Management |
Politics | Education |
Conflict Prevention / Development Studies | Governance / Public Administration |
Applicants are encouraged to research thoroughly the
course(s) in which they are interested. Full information on courses can
be found via the links from the University website.
What is the value of the scholarship?
Each scholarship will cover the tuition fee and
approved College fee in Cambridge, and a stipend for the duration of the
course that is sufficient for a single and unaccompanied person. The
scholarship may also include other expenses such as return travel
to/from the UK. Each scholarship offer will clearly state the terms.
If the course fee is one of those charged at a
premium rate, such as the MBA or MFin, only part of the tuition fee will
be paid by the scholarship, and the recipient will need to find the
balance of the fee from their own resources. Again, each scholarship
offer will clearly state the fee that will be covered by the
scholarship.
How many scholarships will be awarded?
Up to two Egypt Chevening Cambridge Scholarships will be awarded in 2012-13.
How do I apply?
Two applications are required:
1. Apply for admission to the University of Cambridge:
- full details can be found on the website of the University’s Board of Graduate Studies, which manages all applications for graduate study
- the deadline for applications is 2 December 2011
2. Apply for the Egypt Chevening Cambridge Scholarship:
- the scholarship application should be made via the online Chevening application
- the deadline for applications will be published on the website of the British Council in Egypt
Only candidates who are successful in both applications may be considered for an Egypt Chevening Cambridge Scholarship.
What is the selection process?
The British Embassy in Cairo will invite shortlisted candidates to interview in spring 2012.
Scholarships will be awarded to candidates who have
been successful at interview, and who have been offered admission to the
University of Cambridge.
Successful candidates will be notified by June/July
2012, and will need to fulfil any outstanding conditions of their
admission to the University (such as proof of English language skills)
before applying for their student visa.
Can the scholarship be deferred until a later year?
No, the scholarship offer is only applicable in the
year for which it is awarded, i.e. 2012-13. Candidates who wish to defer
their studies until a later year will need to apply again to both the
University and to the British Council in Cairo.
