The Geophysics Section of the School of Cosmic Physics, Dublin Institute for Advanced Study, invites applications for a seismology Ph.D. position in regional and global seismic tomography. Advanced techniques of seismic imaging (waveform inversion, array tomography) will be applied to large new datasets in order to determine anisotropic seismic structure of the lithosphere and underlying mantle. Possible focus areas and applications include methodology of finite-frequency waveform tomography with very large datasets, global dynamics of the Earth's upper mantle, dynamics of active continental deformation, structure and evolution of Ireland and northern Atlantic, and global propagation of the "W phase" (used in tsunami early warning).

Applicants should have excellent grades, preferably an advanced degree (M.Sc. or similar), background in geophysics, physics or mathematics and strong computing skills. The position will offer opportunities for occasional seismic fieldwork across Ireland (primarily, the maintenance of Ireland Array which would require a valid driving licence and physical fitness.

All applicants are requested to send an e-mail containing a complete CV, a statement of research interests, English proficiency certification if applicable (DIAS requirements are the same as those of UCD: https://myucd.ucd.ie/admission/english_requirement.ezc?pageID=1415), academic transcripts, and the names and contact details of 3 academic referees to Dr. Sergei Lebedev (sergei@cp.dias.ie), with "seismology Ph.D. position" in the subject line.
